OFFICE OF SECURITY REVIEW
EXECUTIVE BRANCH
As the primary office that clears official, unclassified DoD information for public release on behalf of the Secretary of Defense, OSR receives requests directly for DoD security and policy review and public release approval of DoD information from organizations across the Executive Branch. Examples include the White House Office of Science and Technology, Central Intelligence Agency, Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, NASA, the Department of State, and the Department of Homeland Security.
In addition, OSR acts as the sole DoD liaison to the Interagency Security Classification Appeals Panel (ISCAP) that provides the citizenry and users of the classification system with a forum for further review of previous declassification review decisions.
Finally, OSR is the only Department of Defense designee for public release determinations of previously classified DoD foreign policy documents identified for inclusion in the Foreign Relations of the U.S. (FRUS) historical book series published by the Office of the Historian, Department of State. OSR approves publication of previously classified DoD equities associated with major U.S. foreign policy decisions and significant diplomatic activity.
