ABOUT IASP

Protecting and Securing the Information Advantage for the Department of Defense

The Information Assurance Scholarship Program (IASP), authorized by Chapter 112, title 10, United States Code, is designed to assist in recruiting and retaining highly qualified personnel in the field of Information Assurance (IA) to meet the Department of Defense’s (DoD) information technology requirements for national defense and the security of its information infrastructure. By utilizing and securing the most sophisticated networked information systems in the world, DoD maintains a substantial information advantage over any potential adversary, a key contributor to mission success. Protecting and securing this information advantage is critical to the national security of the United States and its allies.

Information Assurance encompasses scientific, technical, and management activities that ensure computer and network security. Functions supported by DoD’s IA workforce include:

  • Systems/network administration and operation
  • Systems security engineering
  • Information assurance systems and product acquisition
  • Cryptography
  • Threat and vulnerability assessment (includes risk management)
  • Web security
  • Computer emergency response team operations
  • Information assurance training, education and management
  • Computer forensics
  • Defensive information operations
  • Critical information infrastructure assurance

Funding permitting, the IASP is also authorized to provide grants to select institutions of higher learning, jointly designated by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAEs). These grants are used to fund proposals for faculty, curriculum, infrastructure development and academic research to support DoD’s IA critical areas of interest.

The Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Networks and Information Integration (ASD (NII))/DoD Chief Information Officer is responsible for program oversight, establishes IASP policy and guidance, and secures funding for the program. The National Security Agency, serves as the IASP Executive Administrator and manages the IASP student, faculty and agency interface on behalf of the Department.
